FIVE WEEK TOUR IN AUSTRALIA (New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 14. The eight members of the New Zealand tennis team and their manager (Mr E. McCarroll, of Wellington), left Whenuapai this evening by air for Sydney to begin their five-week tour of New South Wales and Queensland. They will return on November 20. The players are J. E. Dobson. A. S. Burns, L. Gerrard, D. Shaw, and Misses S. Cox, H. Morrison, B. Nelson, and J. Davidson. They will take part in arranged tournaments and in the New South Wales and Queensland State championships.

R. HOWE TO PLAY IN N.Z. TOURNEY

LEADING AUSTRALIAN PLAYER (New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON. October 14. R. Howe, a leading Australian tennis player who has had wide experience and considerable success in overseas tournaments, will compete in the New Zealand championships at Auckland from January 5 to January 12. Two English players, Knight and Davis, will also compete. Howe will compete in the North Island championships at Hamilton, and it is hoped that the three players will be available for special matches after the national championships. Howe has beaten Hoad. Larsen, and Worthington, and haS won many doubles titles.

OPAWA CLUB BEGINS NIGHT TENNIS The Opawa Tennis Club opened its fourth season of night tennis on its flood-lit courts on Saturday evening. The club president (Mr C. N. Franklin) and Mrs Franklin welcomed the 70 members and guests. The chairman of the lighted courts committee (Mr W. R. Rollinson) said it was intended to have the courts in use every night of the week. Mr M. Stevens controlled the matches played during the evening. Mrs I. S. Jackson won the women’s section, with 21 games. L. R. Lohrey, M. Stevens, and M. Berkeley, tied for first place in the men’s tournament with 16 games each.

LINWOOD CLUB Mr H. .Crookbain, president of the Linwood Lawn Tennis Club, declared the club’s season open on Saturday afternoon. Trophies won last season were presented as follows by Mrs Crookbain:— Championships.—Men’s singles, G. Baker; women's singles, Miss L. Mills, women’s doubles, Mrs J. F. Brooks and Miss L. Mills; men’s doubles, G. E. Laidlaw and I G. Baker; mixed doubles, Mrs J. F. Brooks and G. C. Laidlaw; boys’ singles, John Napier. Handicap Events.—Women’s singles, Miss L. Mills; men’s doubles, H. Crookbain and M. Brookes; women’s doubles, Mrs J. F. Brooks and Miss L. Mills: mixed doubles, G. C. Laidlaw and Mrs Laidlaw.
