CHRIST’S COLLEGE SPORTS

HALF-MILE RECORD BROKEN

J. MILNE’S EXCELLENT EFFORT On a track which had been affected by yain and was not in a condition for record-breaking times, Christ's College annual sports, which were concluded on Saturday, revealed a wealth of talent by competitors in all grades. Although the atate of the ground did not allow for the brilliance that can be expected to come later, the standard of the performances was very high, and it is possible that the college is stronger in all-round sport than for some years past. This will be shown at the inter-secondary school jports to be held soon. The Old Boys’ Champion Cup for most points scored in open events, was won bv j. W. Dalmer, who was first in the 220 yards, dead-heated in the long jump, and was second in the 440 yards, putting the weight, and 100 yards. He scored 13 points to beat J. R. Fountain 81 points with D. B. Ford and R. Skelton 8 points a tie for third. In the intermediate grade, J. Bristed with 12 points had a narrow margin over j. Rivers 11 points, and D. W. McKenzie In the junior division, D. W. Lawrence had a clear-cut win with 20 points from j Agar and R. J. K Collins, who each scored eight points. On the first day of the meeting on Friday, the junior champion, D. W. Lawrence, won the 880 yards in 2min 17sec, an improvement of 3sec on the previous best, 2min 20sec. established bv A M Robertson in 1954, and on Saturday J Milne made new’ figures for the half-mile’ which he ran in 2min 6.6 sec. displacing the record of 2min ll.Ssec held bv A R Cottrell since 1952. Milne’s performance was exceptionally good for he took the lead at the end of the first 100 yards, and from then on he set a nace which his opponents could not match.

In the 100 yards open. D. B. Ford, who won his heat in 10.8 sec, improved to 10.6 sec to win the final impressivelv two yards ahead of J. W. Dalmer, and on a faster track it seemed that the long-stand-ing record of lOJsec. set by F. G. Westenra in 1877, might have been broken. Ford who, with Dalmer and Fountain make the Rugby’ three-quarters line for Christ’s College, is a brilliant young sprinter of whom still better things may be expected.

The 100 yards intermediate final produced an excellent finish and was won by 3. Bristed in llsec, only one-fifth of a second outside the record o* 10 4-ssec set by J. A. Crowe in 1951. Bristed had won his heat on the first day in 11.6 sec. Events decided earlier in the year included the three steeplechase events which resulted:— Open (five miles!.—T. W. Hutchinson 1. M. E.
