EGYPT WILL NOT SEND TEAM
MELBOURNE. October 13. Egypt officially notified the Olympic organising committee today that she would not take part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. A cable sent to the chairman of the organising committee, Mr W. S. Kent Hughes, by the Egyptian Olympic committee said: “Letter sent to inform not being able to take part in the Games.” It was announced in Cairo on August 12 that Egypt would withdraw from the Games. No reasons were given. Egypt had planned to send a team of about 100 athletes, and the Egyptian Government had allocated £125,000 towards the cost.
Egypt’s withdrawal leaves 73 nations in the Games—still a record.
