ARMS PLANT DISMISSALS

1600 Affected In Australia (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 13. Dismissal notices have been given to nearly 1600 employees in Government defence production plants. The dismissals were in accordance with the announcement on Wednesday by the Minister of Defence Production (Sir Eric Harrison) that Australia’s defence work force was to be reduced from about 11,000 to 800 C as service equipment orders were met. Sir Eric Harrison said the Government and the services were exercising caution before embarking on new production programmes in ordnance and aircraft plants, therefore some retrenchment was necessary. The biggest single reduction in the first batch of dismissals was made in aircraft factories, where 800 were laid off.

Some 300 received their notices at ordnance factories, 254 at a small arms plant, 170 at explosives factories, and 60 at an ammunition works. Sir Eric Harrison said on Wednesday that the men dismissed would not be unemployed because they were needed in private industry.
