OBITUARY

MRS M. A. H. SOLOMON The last survivor of the raid on Te Huki Pa at Mohaka in 1869 has died at Oaro. She was Mrs Miria Amelia Horomona Solomon. She died at the home of her son, Mr Rangi Solomon. Mrs Solomon was 90. She was a high-ranking chieftainness of the Ngatipa-Uwera Hapu of the Ngatikahungunu tribe of Wairoa. Hawkes Bay. At various times, she had lived at Port Levy, Rapaki, Tuahiwi. and Akaroa. Mrs Solomon was well khowfi to both Maori and pakeha throughout New Zealand. She was identified particularly with the Chatham Islands, where she carried out much welfare work for members of the Maori race. Mrs Solomon is survived by her son and one daughter, Mrs E. T. Tirikatene, wife of the member of Parliament for the Southern Maori electorate.

MRS M. A. PYCROFT

Mrs M. A. Pycroft, of 20 Reeves road, Opawa, who died recently, would have celebrated her ninety-fourth birthday on November 11. Born in Yorkshire, she came to New Zealand with her parents in the sailing ship Rakaia in 1873, Mrs Pycroft lived in Christchurch for 83 years, for the past 47 years within a quarter of a mile of her first New Zealand home. She attended the Opawa School and was the oldest former pupil to attend the school’s jubilee celebrations a few years ago. In 1883 she married Mr James Pycroft. Before her husband’s death *hey celebrated their sixty-seventh wedding anniversary. She is survived by her daughter, Miss Alice Pycroft. Hearing Aid Services, Hereford Court.
