EDEN SPEAKS ON SUEZ

“Not Giving Way On Principles”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, September 21. Sir Anthony Eden, in a message to the Conservative candidate in a Parliamentary by-election, has said that his Government would continue to strive for a just and peaceful settlement of the canal dispute. “But we are resolved not to give way on the principles at stake,’' the message said. “AU our effort to overcome our own internal economic difficulties, all our hopes for maintaining and increasing the standard of living at home, will be lost if by weakness or folly we now abandon our rights or evade pur duties.” Sir Anthony Eden said it was unjust and unworthy to suggest that the British Government wanted to precipitate a war over the Suez issue.

“The free world is placed in a dangerous situation only through the impulsive action of the Egyptian Government,” he said. “We must mark the lessons of vhe last 25 years and ’-eanse that to excuse a dictator’s action will not win peace.” The message was addressed vesterda” to the Conservative candidate (Mr William Rees-Mogg) in a byelection at Chester-Le-Street on September 27, made necessary by the death of a Labour member (Mr P. Bartley).
