DISMISSALS BY BUILDERS

COMMENT BY HOUSING MINISTER

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 21. “I can say to the New Zealand master builders and the Hutt Valley builders that every effort is being made to provide the additional building sites that are urgently needed in the Wellington area,’’ said the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) today. He was replying to reports that builders were dismissing workers for whom they had no jobs. “Perhaps the builders’ organisations could help by showing a little more initiative themselves, and not ask the Government to do everything for them,’’ Mr Sullivan said. “There are no recorded applications for work in Lower Hutt or Wellington. In fact, the number of notified vacancies, including the demand for builders’ labourers, has increased over recent weeks.’’ said the Minister.
