TALKS WITH POWER SUPPLIERS

Mr J. T. Haynes, a leading British gas authority, has arrived in New Zealand to advise electric supply authorities on technical aspects of their taking over gas works which have been declared essential by the Electricity and Gas Co-ordination Committee set up by the Government. Mr Haynes will spend the next fortnight in Auckland, having discussions with the Auckland Electric Power Board and the Auckland Gas Company, after which he is to advise 10 other supply authorities' which are faced with taking over gas undertakings. He is expected in Christchurch early in November, and will then go to Timaru to advise the City Council there on issues which may improve the efficiency of the local gas undertaking, which has already been taken over by the council. Officials of the Christchurch City Council and the Christchurch Gas Company will have preliminary discussions on the proposed merger before Mr Haynes arrived in Christchurch. Until his retirement a few weeks ago, Mr Haynes was general manager of the western division of the Southern Gas Board, England, which controls gas distribution in Bournemouth, Salisbury, and the whole of the county of Dorset. He is a'member and past president of the Institution of Gas Engineers and a member of the Institution of Engineers.
