Glint May Gain Overdue Win In Methven Sprint

TROTTING

Glint, winner of the New Zealand Oaks States last season, may have, her first win of the current term in the S. G. Holmes Memorial Handicap, the sprint race at the Methven Troting Club’s spring meeting today. The £550 race has drawn an outstanding field, and betting will be well spread. Glint appeared to have the Seaview Handicap won at New Brighton last week, until the brilliant Bon Ton challenged. Although well beaten, she beat the others just as easily. She has 14 horses starting in front of her today, but she will have a run of over two furlongs before the first bend, and this should enable her to work into a reasonably handy position. The Whipster mare is a smart sprinter, and it will be surprising if she is not in the finish.

Lady Belmer showed that ?he had a bright future when she won at New Brighton three weeks ago. She lost 48 yards at the start, but won narrowly but well. If she makes a reasonable beginning today, her brilliant speed is certain to put her among the leaders at the finish.

Johnny Derby was an unlucky third to Bon Ton and Glint at New Brighton last week. He was pushed, back through the field at the end of half a mile and came with a great run from well back in the straight. With more luck today, he should be prominent. He will again be bracketed with Special Attack, which disappointed by stopping to a walk at the end of five furlongs at New Brighton last week. That was no doubt only a temporary lapse, and if she races up to her fine form of last season, she should be hard to beat.

Gold Moana won well over one mile and a half at New Brighton last week. He appears to have struck solid form at the moment, and from the front cannot be left out of calculations. Reality, Aldora, and Coincident are other smart sprinters capable of showing to advantage. Division Race Divisions will be required in the Westward Ho Handicap, a race for maiden pacers. The first division seerns the weaker, and is very open. Haughtiness, runner-up to Maxwelton at Waimate last July, may be the hardest to beat. The Wayfarer mare is long overdue for a win. Trojan, which was placed in his six final appearances last season, will also be hard to beat. He has plenty of speed and stamina, but does not always race solidly. Question, which will be having his first start, is a member of J. D. Litten’s team, which will be represented

in the second division by the promising Dignus. The bracket will be well supported. Question impressed when he qualified at Methven recently, and he should be a better horse now. Resolution was a useful fourth in his - race at Forbury Park earlier in the month on a track which did not appear to suit him. He should be prominent, as should Fontenoy, Lord Argyle, and Solemnity. Quare Times, runner-up to Fontenoy at Forbury Park, may win the second division. Quare Times is a member of D. L. McGregor’s Tinwald team. Most opposition to him may come from Wee Doll and Dignus. Wee Doll was placed in her two starts last season and she looked well forward when raced at recent trial meetings. She should have more stamina than most in the race. Dignus, which will be having his first race start, is by Fallacy from Alouette. He showed to advantage at the recent Addington trials and may make a bold showing. Spaxton showed plenty of ability when he qualified on the Methven course recently. He is trained by I. M. and W. E. Scoon at Rakaia, and could be prominent. Chanter, Kokomo, and Shemara are other possibilities in this division. Port Dell, which showed ability at the trotting gait at the recent Addington trials, is, selected to win the Drayton Handicap. She raced as a pacer last season, but is being trotted by D. G. Nyhan at Templeton. She has a good style of trotting and appears to have a bright future. Unlikely, a winner at Forbury Park earlier in the month, is another promising trotter, and he could give a good account of himself from 36 yards. . Judear showed speed at the Addington trials,. and if she trots as well as she did in some of her races last season she will not be without prospects. Reflective, which pleased in a race at the Addington trials, Basha Felika, Phils Jewel, Waihora Queen, and u. oprano are other prospects in an open race.

A strong field is carded for the first leg of the double, the Methven Cup in which Ruth Again, Unite, and Light Nurse appear to have the strongest claims. However, they are certain to receive strong opposition from Lady Fof k ’ Dresden Lad y> and Marshall Siizendy, Legislate, and Empyrlan should fight out the finish of the the Avonmore Handicap, in which All In, Make Way and Morere may be prominent. Great interest will be taken in'the £ Three-year-old Stakes.
