EXTRA PENNY FOR CHEESE
PAYMENT ON SEASON'S PRODUCTION JOINT ANNOUNCEMENT BY DAIRY INTERESTS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 5. Payment to cheese factory cupYliers for the whole of the current season is to be increased by Id per .b butterfat. The differential between prices paid to butter and cheese factory suppliers which was 3d per lb has been increased to 4d. In a joint statement, the chairman of the Dairy Products Marketing Commission <Mr W. Marshall) and the chairman of the Dairy Board (Mr A. Linton) said the cheese differential was being increased with the agreement of the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake). The additional payment will be made under the provision o fsection 22 (2) iB) of the Dairy Products Marketing Commission Act, 1947, to co-operative cheese manufacturing companies for all butterfat used during the season ending on July 31 for the manufacture of cheese. In arriving at this decision, consideration was given to the good returns being received by the commission for cheese, casein and milk powder. It was considered undesirable that there should be any further switch from cheese to butter and casein manufacture at the present time and the proposed payment should have the effect of maintaining the desired stability. It was also decided that the cheese differential over butter for the season ending July 31, 1957, will be fixed at a minimum of 3d per lb butterfat. This will be the basic differential for that season. The commission and the board will jointly review the differential after the end of the season when realisations for the season are known.
