Senior Major Jean Bennett. Samaritan officer of the Salvation Army in Christchurch, has been promoted to the rank of brigadier Brigadier Bennett is in charge of the Salvation Army’s new emergency lodge in Bealey avenue. Prizes were presented to members gaining the highest points for competitions throughout the year. They were: Mrs E. Johnstone (president) 1, Mrs Woodham 2, and Mrs Moore 3.

Final plans for delegates to attend the annual conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers at Invercargill this month were made at the recent meeting of the Canterbury Provincial executive. Members agreed to support the South Island hostel for the blind project and the street appeal for the aged. Mrs F. Berry was appointed to represent the movement on the After-Care Committee.

The Rev. W. M. Hendrie spoke on the sanctity of marriage at the monthly meeting of the St. Albans branch of the Lea’gue of Mothers. Mrs W. H. Harvey presided and Mrs D. Pashby gave recitations.

Mrs Timms gave an interesting talk on a visit to America at a recent meeting of the West of England Women’s Association. Mrs G. Eastmond presided.

Mr W. J. Humm spoke on shrubs for the home garden at the monthly meeting of the Belfast Garden Club. A competition for vegetables was won by Mr McFadden. Mrs Huntington presided.

Mr J. Ussher spoke on child psychology at the monthly meeting of the Papanui-Merivale Plunket Mothers’ Club. Competitions were won by Mrs D. W. White and Mrs S. O’Brien. The monthly meeting of the Papanui Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs A. W. Leithead, Papanui road. Competitions resulted:—Pot plant, A class. Mrs A. C. McKillop and Mrs L. At the Dominion executive meeting of the New Zealand Federation of University Women held in Christchurch. reports were received from Miss Kitty Pavioni Smith and Miss Joan Metge, both of whom are studying in Britain. Miss Metge will-take up a federation fellowship in October. She is doing post-graduate work in anthropology in London under Professor Firth, and has already been offered, in addition, a post as parttime research assistant under Professor Firth. Miss Pavioni Smith was the 1954-55 fellow. She has been working for two years in Oxford, in residence at Lady Margaret Hall. She has sent to the Dominion executive a report of a specialised piece of work on the animals associated with fungi that infest trees.

The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the women’s auxiliary of the Lyttelton Returned Services’ Association: president. Mrs M. Barnes: vice-president. Mrs B Loader: secretary-treasurer. Mrs E. Halliday: committee, Mesdames D. Cowan, M. Stenson. D. Forward, F. Welsh, and G. Mitchell.

The Rev. W. T. Blight spoke on the sanctity of marriage at the monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs Markham presided.
