WASHDYKE DOUBLE

Scuppered And Russleigh

Baffling Eyes is the form horse for the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap at Washdyke tomorrow, but his failure to improve on a number of recent placing? for some time now will widen the search for the winner. Baffling Eves was third in the Timaru Cup. and ’the horses that beat him Nuclear and Good Abbot, will not oppose him this time. Nor will Horatiu-. which Baffling Eyes cut out of third place in the last few strides. Scuppered's fast-finishing fifth in the Timaru Cup stamped her as an earlv improver. She made her run from the tail of a field that was bigger than this one. Scuppered's best is good enough to make her one of the best prospects. Her bracketed mate. Overboard, is also an

acceptor for the second leg. the Doncaster Handicap, and that race may be chosen for him, as it was last Saturday. . , x.

Relinquish was running on for sixth i in the Timaru Cup, but Scuppered’s was a superior effort. The likely improver in the field is Roi du Bois, which made a fresh start after a spell at Oamaru. and needed h’s first two races on his present campaign. He has won over a mile and a half, and his stamina should help him to play a hand in the finish of tomorrow’s race if he is properly fit. Overboard will have some smart milers to contend with if he is reserved for the Doncaster Handicap, but in his present form there is good reason to respect his chance against the best of them.

Paulette, a fast-fini c hing third at Ash burton two starts back, is expected t<

gone up 81b to 9st 101 b. Regardless was comfortably held bv Overboard In a corresponding race last week, but was later promoted to first. Overboard will now meet him on 101 b better terms, and unless Overboard runs very badlv this time they should finish in the same order.

Russleigh has dropped out of her Trentham engagement, and gives this field a fresh touch of class. She did not rac? last Saturday but beat all but Macduff at Ashburton when having her second race on her present campaign. Russleigh may be even better now than she was at Ashburton. At any rate, she has enough abilitv to play one of the big roles in the finish.

Sawdust will probably be responsible for most of the pacemaking. He was eaught too far from the post last Saturday, when he was fourth to finish and was promoted to third, to be regarded as anything better than a fair prospect.

At the weights. Whipsnade i« preferred. This fast Orari-trained galloper was fifth in the second leg last week, and lost a chance of finishing in one of the places by being troublesome and giving ground from the outside at the start.

Prosecutor should be the hest of a mediocre lot in the Timaru Hack Steeplechase. He was not tested last Saturday, when he jumped cleanly and offered evidence of some stamina. A rise of 101 b in the weights should not stop him from completing a double for the meeting. Selections:— 11 a.m.—Caroline Handicap: Lucky Time, Dellar.
