CHRISTCHURCH CAGE BIRD SOCIETY’S ANNUAL SHOW

A colourful display of foreign birds, including many varieties of parrots and parakeets, is the highlight of the annual show of the Christchurch Society of Cage Birds, which opened in the Winton Street Hall. St. Albans, last evening. There are 512 entries in eight classes at the show. A macaw from South America, exhibited by F. G. Taylor. Kairaki, attracted most attention. This entry, which was awarded the championship in the foreign birds section, is a large parrot with an orange breast, and turquoise and green colouring on the back and tail. Other birds in this section include rosellas. cockatiels. and a ringneck parakeet. Increased entries in the British bird section indicate an awakening of interest in the breeding of the common varieties of birds. Quail, chaffinches, goldfinches, green linnets, and other breeds familiar to town and country residents are displayed. Judges considered the standard of the exhibits was high. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m today, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow, the final day. The judges were: Norwich and border canaries. Mr D. Gillies: Yorkshire cannaries. -Jr D.
