HOLIDAY FOR FOOTBALL
NO PAY FOR TIME OFF A decision that employees be given an opportunity of attending the Rugby match between the touring South Africans and the Combined Team at Timaru on July 18. but without payment for any time lost vas made at a meeting convened by the South Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association in Timaru on Wednesday. The meeting, held to discuss the request of the Mayor 'Mr R. E. White) that staff be granted a half-holiday where possible, was attended by representatives of retailers, garage proprietors. manufacturers, and other businessmen. Representatives of various groups said they wanted to co-operate to the fullest extent in allowing employees to attend the match. Various types of business would be affected differently and in manufacturing businesses time off for employees meant loss of production. This was not desirable. It was stated that it was the intention of most businesses to arrange for employees to m«ke tin for lost time.
