N.Z. NEWSPRINT EXPORTS
NO CUTS PLANNED BY AUSTRALIA (N.Z Press Association.—Copyright) 'Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 2. Trade officials in Canberra said today there had been no cuts in quotas for Australian imports of New Zealand newsprint, nor were any cuts likely. Australia was buying all the newsprint New Zealand could supply, and doubtless, as the amount available increased, Australia would take this to replace dollar newsprint, the officials said. They had been asked to comment on the likely effect Australia’s new import cuts would have on trade from New Zealand. Paper was listed by the Acting Minister of Trade (Mr W. McMahon) as an item to which the restrictions will be applied. The officials said the new restrictions applied to goods imported from New Zealand in the same way as they did to goods from other countries. The restrictions did not discriminate between countries with which Australia traded, but only cut the quotas of foreign exchange available to importers who were free to spend their quotas in any country.
