TIMBER EXPORT AGREEMENT
N.Z. SURPLUS FOR AUSTRALIA
NO ALTERATION TO ARRANGEMENT (New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 2. The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) made arrangements during his recent trade mission to Australia for the issue of special licences to enable New Zealand to ship its total surplus of timber to Australia, said Mr K. C. Carter, president of the Dominion Sawmillers’ Federation and chairman of the New Zealand Timber Export Council, today. Mr Carter said the arrangements mad _• by Mr Holland would make timber exports this year about 55 million super feet, compared with last year’s 42 million super feet. Mr Carter said he did not expect this arrangement to be altered as a result of the new Australian import cuts. A delegation from New Zealand followed Mr Holland's visit to make detailed arrangements for the new procedure. The new system of special licences replaced a similar system which was terminated in November last year, Mr Carter added.
The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) said today that he had heard nothing to make him believe Australia did not intend to carry out the spirit of the agreement.
