N.Z. FORCES IN KOREA
COMMANDER RETURNS TO CHRISTCHURCH NO REPLACEMENT TO BE MADE Lieutenant-Colonel E. H. L. Maxwell. officer commanding the New Zealand military forces in Korea for the last 14 months, arrived in Christchurch by air from Sydney yesterday. He immediately began looking for a house to bring his family to before taking up a new appointment at Southern Military District headquarters next month.
Lieutenant-Colonel Maxwell, whose predecessor was a brigadier, will not be replaced as the New Zealand base in Kure, Japan, is being “allowed to run down.” The New Zealand transport platoon and administrative headquarters in Korea itself are now’ commanded by a New Zealand major and controlled from British Far East headquarters in Singapore.
“I’m glad to be home.” said Lieu-tenant-Colonel Maxwell who will lose rank to relieve Major R. J. H. Webb at headquarters. Accompanying Lieutenant-Colonel Maxwell was the deputy-assistant quartermaster-general lor the Dominion force in Korea, Major D. M. Sweeney, another Regular officer who will take up normal duties after leave.
