TOURNAMENT AT INVERCARGILL
WIN FOR SOUTHLAND "The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, July 1. Southland yesterday won the Southern Minor Hockey Associations’ tournament in Invercargill. It beat Eastern-Northern, 4-1. It will now play Marlborough in the final of the Quatre Bras Cup competition in Christchurch this month.
The best game of the last round of the tournament on Saturday was between Ashburton and South Canterbury. Ashburton won, 1-0. A draw might have been a better indication of play.
The m?tch was fast, even, and hardfought. The Ashburton forward line and the team generally looked a better combination, but seemed unable to finish movements successfully. Both goalkeepers were called upon for considerable efforts, and South Canterbury’s J. Haimi threw himself into the game with abandon.
There was no s'-ore in the first half. Fifteen minutes before time, South Canterbury was awarded a free hit in the circle. The hit was beautifully trapped by Smith, and he goaled.
