MAN FOUND ON MUDFLATS
DEATH IN CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL An elderly man who was found lying on the mudflats at South Brighton early on Sunday afternoon died in the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday morning. He was: William James Cooksley, aged 64, a war pensioner.
When found by a resident he was covered in mud and appeared to have been in the water. He was still conscious when examined by a doctor, and was then taken by St. John Ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Mr Cooksley, who was a brother of the member of Parliament for Wairarapa (Mr B. V. Cooksley), was last seen by a neighbour at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, but his whereabouts from that time until his discovery on the mudflats were not known. There is no suspicion of foul play. A police search was made for Mr Cooksley about a fortnight ago when a relative in Christchurch reported him missing. He was later found with his brother in the North Island.
Mr Cooksley was formerly licensee of the Rotherham and Rolleston Hotels. An inquest was opened before the Coroner (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) yesterday afternoon.
