ALSTER AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS
MODIFICATIONS ORDERED FOR 64 PLANES
Operators of all Auster aircraft m New Zealand are being ordered by the Civil Aviation Administration to make structural alterations to their machines for safety. The action is being taken after 11 persons have lost their lives in four Auster crashes, and is a sequel to an investigation into a crash at Pirinoa, near Masterton, early this year when three persons were killed. As a result of the Pirinoa accident, the overload limit on Austers used in aerial topdressing has been lowered. Modifications will permit the higher load factor to be resumed.
Throughout New Zealand 64 Austers used by the topdressing industry, aero clubs and private persons will be involved in modifications.
Alterations to be made are strengthening of rear-lift struts, replacement of the tail trim cable with a stronger cable and stronger welded joints on the control arch.
Aircraft are permitted to fly in the meantime, but the administration urges that all care should be* taken.
