CURRENT NOTES

Mrs A. Rose, president of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, presided at a successful meeting held in the Burwood School i when a Burwood sub-branch of the • society was formed. Mrs D. Dele- j main was elected president, Mrs P.; Breach was elected honorary secre-J tary-treasurer. and the following were « elected to the committee: Mesdames N. Brown, J. Currie. B. Gilster, N. I Harris, J. Jeffs, C. McGregor, M j Parker and E. Rouch. It was agreed 1 to. form a Plunket Mothers’ Club in . the district.

The Rev. D. G. Shaw spoke on the marriage service at the monthly meeting of the Bryndwr branch of the League of Mothers. Three new members were enrolled and 13 children were cared for in the creche. Mrs O. Mitchell presided. Items were given by the choir and drama circles.

Mrs Abbott spoke on her life in India at. the monthly meeting of the Linwood Townswomen’s Guild. from the Richmond guild were welcomed by Mrs G. Lamont. Mr L. Smith described the cultivation of fuchsias to members of the garden circle.

The monthly meeting of the Islington sub-branch of the Plunket Society took the form of a “Come-as-a-Song-Tuie” social. There was a good attendance and many excellent costumes. Prizes were awarded to Mesdames JMcTeigue, J. Murray. N. Searle, and Miss Carc.yn Roberts. Mesdames L. Fuller. Maso i, Moftet, Coulter and Brown presented items. The drama circle provided the entertainment at the monthly meeting ol the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild. Mesdames Sanger and Osborne were appointed delegates to the annual council meeting of the movement to be held in Hastings. A demonstration on pruning was given to members of the gardening circle. The report presented at the annual meeting of the Spreydon Garden Club showed that a gift of £l2 had been made to the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s building fund. Mr P. C. Browne spoke on the preparation of show schedules and the arranging of flowers for the show bench. Winners of competitions for the year were Mesdames Hulston, Ingles. Burley, and Pelvin. The club’s patron is Mrs G. S. Webb. Mrs Woodcock was re-elected president. Other officers elected were: vice-presidents, Mesdames Hulston and Boswell: secretary. Mrs Monson: treasurer, Mrs G. Wilson; bring and buy table, Mesdames R. Wilson. Pelv.’n, and Miss Philpott; stewards. Mesdames Stubberfield. Stanton, and Ingles; committee, Mesdames Murray, McKenzie. Ingles, Stanton, and Pelvin: reporter. Miss I. Fehsenfeld. Monthly competitions resulted:—miniature vase, A class: Mrs Ingles 1, Mrs Hulston 2, Miss Fehsenfeld 3: B class. Mrs Wall 1, Miss Fehsenfeld 2, Mrs Pansing 3. Small bloom: Mrs Belmer 1. Mrs Rhodes 2. Large bloom: Mrs Wall 1. Mrs Monson 2. Mrs Murray 3. Vegetables: Mrs "Wall 1, Mrs Pelvin 2, Miss Philpott 3.

A cake made and given by Mrs Bennett and iced by Mrs Dawson was cut by the Dominion president (Mrs C. Plumridge), a guest, at the third birthday party of the St. Martins Townswomen’s Guild. Other guests were Mrs Collett (Dominion secretary), Mrs J. Fowler (area president', representatives of sister guilds and members and their friends. Solos were sung by Mrs Barnett, and monologues were presented by Mrs Bennett. The singing circle, under the leadership of Mrs Roberts, gave three items, and a sketch produced by Mrs Stewart was given by the drama circle. Mrs K. McLaughlan arranged the programme at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club. Members of St. David’s Church drama club presented a play, produced by Mrs D. M. Bragg, and items were given by the club's choir under the leadership of Mrs McLaughlan. It was reported that £lO 10s had been forwarded to the Christchurch Committee of the Save the Children Fund for the sponsorship of the Greek child. Mrs W. G. Jenkins presided.

The care of roses was described by Mr H. Gourlay at the monthly meeting of the garden circle of the Christchurch North Townswomen’s Guild, held at the home of Mrs P. J rf Jones. Mrs Frame, who celebrated her eightieth birthday, was presented with a floral spray. Results of competitions were: carrot, Mrs Jones 1. Mrs Downes 2, Mrs Jones 3; bloom, Mrs Bailey 1, Mrs Roberts 2, Mrs Seaton 3; decorative, Mrs Bishop 1, Mrs Forbes 2, Mrs McLean and Miss Russell (equal) 3.

Miss Nola Luxford, the founderpresident of the Anzac Club in New York, will arrive in Auckland on July 11 on a visit to relatives. Miss Luxford was awarded an 0.8. E. for her services in organising entertainments for New Zealand servicemen on leave in New York during the war.

Miss F. S. O’Keeffe, head typist at the Ministry of Works office, Auckland. retired after 42 years’ service on Friday. Miss O’Keefe is believed to have set two New Zealand records, one for women’s service and the other for length of time in one building. The Ministry of Works staff in the Auckland office presented her with a china cabinet, a telephone stool and a cheque when she left. Thirty-two members of the Charlotte Jane contract bridge group of the New Zealand Pioneers and Descendants’ Club played in the President’s Cup match. Mrs R. Archibald was the winner by one point from Mrs A. Dick and Mrs J. A. Kneebone who were equal for second place. Mrs H. Trevor Foster was third. Results of the first round of a three-round duplicate tournament were as follows: North-South: Mrs O. W. Bull and Miss M. Wigley, 1; Mrs W. Hopley ana Mrs M. Duncan, 2; Mrs A. Dick and G. Wright, 3. East-West: Mrs A. W. Spence and Mrs G. C. Wilson, 1; Mrs M. White and Miss E. Lace, 2; Mrs M. O’Malley and Mrs H. J. Haughey, 3.
