AUSTRALIA’S PART IN KOREAN WAR
Criticism By U.S. Senator WASHINGTON. June 28. Senator William Knowland. the Senate minority leader, today defended Australia as an ally after her contribution to the Korean war had been attacked during a Senate debate on President Eisenhower’s Foreign Aid Bill. Senator Allen Ellender (Democrat. T.ousiana) declared that the "United States was carrying much more than its fair share of the burden of the common defence effort. Australia, he said, had withdrawn its troops from Korea while the United States had been forced to maintain its strength there for a much longer period. “Australia did not contribute a dime to the Korean effort,” said Senator Ellender. This brought Senator Knowland (Renublican, California) to his feet. “When the chips are down there are a few countries which would stand up and be counted—l think Australia would be one,” said Senator Knowland.
He recalled Australia’s great efforts in World War II as well as in Korea.
Slight Earthquake in Taipeh.— An earth tremor of slight intensity shook Taipeh early this morning. People were awakened by the rattling of windows. Some window panes were broken at Tainan, a city in southern Formosa, but no other damage was reported.—Taipeh, June 30.
