World’s Production Of Books
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 29. More than 5000 million copies of books are produced throughout the world each year, representing two books for every person. Half the books published are for use in schools and about three-quarters of all the books come from only 10 countries. This was reported today by Mr R. E. Barker, Deputy-Secretary of the Publishers’ Association of Great Britain, in a survey of problems of the international book trade. The survey showed that few countries publish more than 10,000 titles a year, and 75 per cent, of all titles published originate in 10 countries headed by Russia, Japan, Britain, and India. In a table of the retail bookselling business in 16 countries, Russia topped the list with 24,000 titles followed by Italy with 9600 and the United States and Britain with about 8500 each.
