RIVERS RISING IN N.S.W.
Floods Cause City’s Evacuation SYDNEY, June 29. A third of the city of Wagga, in New South Wales, is flooded, and the Murrumbidgee river is still rising. Police expect the river—now 31ft 6in high—to rise another foot to the peak level.
More than 2000 persons have been evacuated from their homes round the city, mostly from north Wagga. About 700 are camping in the show grounds, and the rest are staying in private homes. The water in some streets was lapping round houses at window-level today. About 200 aboriginals on the south side of the Lachlan river at Condobolin were moved to the town last night, and tents have been ordered from Sydney for them. Thousands of sandbags have arrived in Warren, on the Macquarie river, and residents are working on weak points in the banks. The peak of the Hood is expected tomorrow. The town of Forbes is waiting for the peak of the Lachlan tonight. Today it was rising slowly and several of the town’s streets were under water.
