MINERS TRAPPED 100 HOURS
“Miracle” Rescue In Japan TOKYO, June 28. Rescue workers today reported that a “miracle” had saved the lives of five coalminers who were trapped underground for more than 100 hours when a shaft at the Yamato coalmine in central Japan caved in during heavy rain last Sunday. Workers said they found the miners huddled in a “pocket” formed by dislodged beams and rafters. They received air from a pipe-line passed through tons of rubble soon after the fall. Digging began immediately after the cave-in on Sunday morning and continued until early this afternoon when rescue teams finally cut through the rubble to the trapped men. Doctors tonight reported that all five miners were in fair condition and were expected to recover.
