VICE-REG AL The Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) and Lady Norrie arrived in Christchurch last evening. This morning, at 11 o’clock, Sir Willoughby Norrie will open the new Rannerdale Home for former servicemen. in Hansons lane, Riccarton. At Raumati South, near Wellington, yesterday afternoon. Sir Willoughby Norrie presented privately to Dr. W P. Evans, senior professor emeritus of Canterbury University College, the insignia relative to his appointment to bo a Commander of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire. Lady Norrie, members of Professor Evans’s family, and Sir David Smith. Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, were also present. The award was made to Professor Evans in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, in recognition of his services to education as professor of chemistry at Canterbury University College from 1903 to 1922. Under an exchange of teachers between colleges of the Society of Mary in New Zealand and in Britain, the Rev. Father R. Connelly. S.M.. M.A. • Cantab), of Marist College. Hull, will
arrive soon to join the staff of St. Bede’s College. Christchurch. Father Connolly is a geography specialist. The Rev. Father J. J. Mannix. S.M.. 8.A.. L.T.C.L.. of the staff of St. Bede’s College. will leave for Hull in August, on exchange. Father Mannix has been on the staff at St. Bede’s College for! the last nine years. Mr James Dixon, a Dunedin bandsman who helped with the re-establish-ment of the Port Chalmers Marine Fand. and the formation of several other Dunedin bands, was made a life member of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association at the annual conference yesterday. Mr A. H. Dawson, formerly principal of Beulah College. Tonga, and for the last four months first assistant at the Christchurch Adventist Central School, has been appointed headmaster of the school as from July 1. . Mr R. S. McGregor, son of Mr and Mrs R. M. McGregor. Ashburton, has been elected bv the Governing body of the Christ Church College. Oxford, to a senior scholarship tenable at the college for two years. Mr McGregor left Ashburton in 1952 and took a B.A. decree at Oxford two years ago. Eventually he expects to return to New Zealand. Mr E. G. Perry has been appointed to the position of senior surgical registrar at the Christchurch Hospital, which will become vacant in March. 1957. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Health Department.
