FREIGHT RATES INCREASED
Tasman And Coastal Shipping RISE IN COSTS BLAMED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 29. The Trans-Tasman Freight and Passenger Conferences have announced an increase in freight rates of 10s a ton on the Tasman shipping services. Passenger fares will be increased by 30s in each class. The increases, which are reported in New Zealand currency, will become effective on Monday. Rising general costs of operation of vessels, including surveys and repairs, and the substantial wage increases which have taken place since the rates were last considered, are the reasons given for the increased charges. The New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation announces increases in coastal freight, rates. In most cases, the increases will be 5s a ton, but in some cases they will be 10s. The increases will be imposed from Monday. The federation says the reasons for the increases are rising general costs, including surveys and repairs, and the greatly increased cost of replacement of vessels.
