RESEARCH WORK IN SILAGE MAKING
Ruakura Animal Research Station is carrying out a good deal of research work on ensilage, to find out various factors which govern its effectiveness as a stock food. This work is being done in conjunction with the Grasslands Division of D.S.T.R.. and should result in some helpful discoveries in connexion with silage-making. The main objects are to discover the best ingredients, the best methods, and the best time to cut grass for this purpose. In general, it is hoped to discover just what is required to make i eally good silage. To carry out this work, 16 miniature silos have been erected, and each of these can hold half a ton of fresh grass. The matter of additives for improving ensilage, and things such as wastage in the | process of making silage are other I aspects being investigated.
