ROAD TRAFFIC CONTROL

“ RESPONSIBILITY OF ONE DEPARTMENT”

RESOLUTION FOR MOTOR UNION

The control of road traffic should be placed under the Police Department, according to a resolution passed by the Automobile Association (Auckland). The resolution was supported by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) at its meeting on Thursday evening. The resolution, which will be moved bv the Auckland association at the June meeting of the North Island Motor Union says: “That the council, recognising the need for a further examination of the system of control of road traffic within the Dominion, noting that in almost every country the control of road traffic is in Che hands of the police, considering that in order to promote and ensure the maximum efficiency such control should be vested exclusively in one department of the Government. “Resolves that the subject of ‘Road iraffic Control’ be placed on the agenda of the next annual conference of the North Island Motor Union.” A committee of three members has been set up to study information on the problem and to obtain all evidence available. It will report to the conference and will make such recommendations as it considers necessary. A copy of the resolution has been sent to the South Island Motor Union with the request that consideration be given to the matter. In 1953 a suggestion that control of traffic be placed under the Police Deoartment was put to both unions and their affiliated associations. Opinions expressed at the time indicated that the majority favoured police control but the matter has not been considered since.
