AWARD OF M.B.E. CONFIRMED
HELICOPTER PILOT’S GALLANTRY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 29. The award of the M.B.E. to Lieutenant J. R. Palmer, of Auckland, was confirmed by the Navy Office tonight. Lieutenant Palmer arrived at Wellington on Tuesday after serving three years with the Royal Navy as a helicopter pilot. When he arrived at Wellington, his only knowledge of the award was a telegram of congratulations from his former colleagues in the Fleet Air Arm.
The award was made in a special honours list dated June 22, said the Navy Office. It was given for gallantry in the rescue of the crew of a foundered Norwegian tanker north of Scotland.
