5000 GUINEAS FOR MERINO RAM

The extremely high price of 5000 guineas was recorded for a ram during the recent annual sales of Merino stud rams at the Sydney show ground. This reflects, to some extent, the confidence of Australian breeders in the future of the fine-wool market. Although this year’s top price of 5000 guineas is not a record, it is one of the highest ever recorded, and was paid for a Bundemar ram sold on account of the estate of F. E. Body, of Bundemar Stud, Trangie. It was the sixth consecutive year that a ram from this stud had topped the Sydney ram sales, and last year’s top Bundemar ram realised the world’s record price of 6000 guineas. The buyer of this year s top ram was E. R. Davies, of Hallet. South Australia, and the sheep was described as one of the best ever sent up from the famous Bundemar stud. The market, in general, was easier than last year, with sheep of medium quality not selling so well. A good demand existed for the top sheep, however. The average for 236 rams sold on the first day was 216igns; while for the two days, 500 sheep averaged 248Igns.
