WEEDS

Control of weeds with chemicals has become highly developed since the war and because of the complexity of materials used and problems associated with their application the Department of Agriculture has been experimenting continuously. Though recommendations now cover a very wide field, the position is constantly changing owing to the production of new materials. Interest in chemical control of weeds extends much further than their strictly agricultural use and the subject is of great importance to local bodies and various other organisations. For that reason there is growing interest in the New Zealand Weed Control Conference, which this year will be held from July 3 to July 6 at Caroline Bay Hall. Timaru. A comprehensive programme has been drawn up for the conference.

The Soviet Minister of Consumer Goods Industry has stated that during the first eight months of 1955, 3.700.000 metres of wool fabrics were produced in excess of the plan. It is also announced that output of wool yarn is expected to be increased by 35 per cent, during the next five years.
