BALING OF SILAGE

An investigation to show the efficacy and costs of baling silage by farmers who have baling equipment and wish to use it has. been completed by the farm machinery section of the Canterbury Agricultural College.

Bales of silage were shown to members of the College Board on a recent inspection. The original weight in the bales of 701 b of green feed were compressed to 401 b. and it was evident that one advantage was that the bale was easily handled. Besides, with the known weight, the demonstrators said, the weight of ration for stock was easv to work out.

The strings binding the bales had not rotted, except those against the sides of the pit. The cost of the silage, including side raking, was £1 15s 5d a ton. The detailed figures to produce 90 tons of silage were:—putting through baler, 6s 8d: twine. 6s 6d: cartage into pit. 16s: rolling. Is 3d: covering with building paner and soil. 2s 6d a ton. Instead of a pit. silage could be made in a bun of pyramid shape, it was explained.
