COMPLAINT ABOUT SMELL
EXPLANATION ACCEPTED BY PAPARUA COUNCIL
After explanations made to the Paparua County Council, the council will not proceed with its investigations into an alleged offensive odour from the Islington Freezing Works. Several residents had complained, to the council, which directed the county health inspector (Mr R. W. Connor) to take the matter up with the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. The odour was alleged to arise from the company’s disposal of effluent from the pelt department of the factory. “The last export season was a diffi cult one. with heavy killings because of drought conditions, and turnover considerably higher than ever before” said the company’s letter. Plans were already in hand for rectifying the nuisance.
“It appears as though the company is really endeavouring to clean the trouble up,” said Cr. J. D. Henderson.
Cr. H. W. Wilson moved that the company should be given an opportunity to put in hand its plans for stopping the smell. He said it was not likely that the company, which itself had employees living near the factory, would wish to • create a nuisance.
