Springboks’ Injuries

The large number of injuries suffered by the Springbok Rugby team may be caused, in part, by a too hurried training schedule, according to a leading Christchurch doctor who has had considerable experience with football injuries. Pulled muscles are often a sign ot under-fitness, he said. He has a theory that they are the result of nervous tension. A player going on the ground tensed and not relaxed had his muscles taut, and when they were knocked they were insufficiently relaxed to take the knock. Relaxation was important: an intoxicated man seldom got hurt when he fell, because he was completely relaxed. The doctor thought the Springboks’ muscle injuries would not be the result of over-training, but more probably through • pressure-cooker” training methods instead of a gradual rise to a peak of fitness. The recent crop of Springboks with pulled muscles included S. S. Viviers. J. U. Buehler. J. du Preez, W. Rosenberg’-and B. D. Pfaff.
