CHINA TO RELEASE 335 MEN PEKING. June 21. Communist China has decided to release 335 Japanese war criminals, it was announced today. A further 17 have been sentenced to .prison terms ranging from eight to 20 years. The prisoners will be the first to be repatriated since the standing committee of (he People’s National Congress decided on April 25. to deal leniently with Japanese who have shown a decree of repentance.

The committee released a statement today saying that the Japanese should have been punished severely for their crimes. But. because of changed conditions. the growth of friendly Japan-ese-Chinese relations, and the repentance of most prisoners, they were being dealt with leniently.
