PARLIAMENTARY VISIT
DRAINAGE BOARD’S SUPPORT
A visit by members of Parliament to Canterbury to see the problems and projects of the district, especially in the metropolitan area, was supported by the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening.
The board agreed to send its chairman (Mr H. P. Smith) and the chairman of the finance committee (Mr G. A. G. Connal) to any conference of local bodies called by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) to discuss the proposed visit. “I don’t think the proposal should be regarded from the point of view of what we are going to get out of it,’’ said Mr Smith, “but there is great progress in the South Island, especially in and around Christchurch, and it would be a good thing if members of Parliament, two-thirds of whom come from the North Island, knew what was happening here." Mr R. C. Neville said the people of Christchurch themselves did not realise the problems faced by local authorities. He considered that a visit by members of Parliament and its attendant publicity would be beneficial if it engendered some public interest in the problems. Several members then urged that entertainment for the Parliamentarians should not be too lavish as the trip would be mainly a business one.
