N.Z.’s Highest Pylon
The first of two pylons from which a 110,000 volt high tension line will be slung across the Manukau Harbour has been completed on the Onehunga waterfront. It rises some 165 feet, and is the highest in New Zealand, although small by world standards. Another similar pylon is rising on the Mangere side of the harbour, but before it is completed walls will have to be built to protect it from the tide. Work on six towers along thg Hillsborough foreshore can only be done when the tide is low. Workmen are labouring at night, in the early morning, and at all times in mud and water, to get the job done. The span across the Manukau Harbour will be roughly parallel to the bridge, and will be about 28| chains.
