FIREMEN INJURED

ROOF OF BURNING BUILDING FALLS IN (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 19. When fighting a spectacular fire in the Winter Show Buildings just after 5 a.m. today, two firemen suffered injuries when the roof fell in on them. Both were treated at hospital and later discharged this morning. Thousands of pounds’ worth of damage was caused and the building— Wellington’s main amateur sports arena—put out of action for at least a week. The fire, which broke out in the Show Association’s office block on the north-west corner, was confined by firemen to near its source. Several hundred square feet of roof was consumed and the office gutted. Weakened by fire, the rafters supporting 20ft by 20ft of the asbestos sheet roof gave way as the firemen entered through the blazing foyer. Fireman I. Shindler suffered arm injuries and Fireman P. Barry suspected rib fractures.
