LIGHTNING DAMAGES SIGNAL TOWER
RAILWAYMAN KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 19. A railwayman on duty in the signal box at the New Plymouth station was knocked unconscious during a severe electrical storm early this morning. The railwayman. Mr J. Oliver, was operating the levers about 5.50 a.m. when lightning struck a tower in the station yard 50 yards away. A telephone at the foot of the tower burst and the yard amplifier in the signal box was blown out.
Officials found the whole of the station telephone system out of action, four windows in the signal box smashed, and the automatic signalling system out of action.
