DUTY ON REDWOOD IMPORTS
SUSPENSION EXTENDED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 19. Customs duties on certain classes of timber, at present suspended until the end of this month, are to be further suspended until the end of December. 1957. Announcing this today, the Minister of Customs (Mr E. H. Halstead) said these duties had been suspended since 1951 as a contribution toward keeping down building costs. The further suspension had been decided on after consultation with the New Zealand sawmilling industry. The timbers affected are rough-sawn or rough-hewn redwood, Douglas fir. and other coniferous types needeu for essential building purposes.
