ANTARCTIC APPEAL

COMMITTEE ISSUES BOOKLET

Householders in the Christchurch metropolitan area should receive this week a booklet issued by the Christchurch Antarctic Appeal Committee to stimulate interest in the appeal for funds for equipping the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition, which will leave for the Ross Sea at the end of the year. Twenty-five thousand copies of the booklet have been printed. In a personal message the chairman of the committee (Mr W. A. Breach) states that of the £12.500 required from the Christchurch and North Canterbury area nearly £5OOO is now in sight.

The booklet briefly describes New Zealand’s part in the Trans-Antarctic expedition, and also contains information about the Antarctic continent, the Ross Dependency and early Antarctic exploration. Photographs published by courtesy of the Trans-Ant-arctic expedition show three New Zealand observers in the Ross Sea area, the Theron held in the Weddell Sea pack ice (the photograph is by Mr George Lowe) and the proposed site for the New Zealand Antarctic base. There is also a map showing the proposed route for the Antarctic crossing Provision is made for the forwarding of donations, and Mr Breach says that share certificates will be posted for all donations of 5s or more.

Dates of Canterbury Rugby representative fixtures and Ranfurly Shield matches and an itinerary of the Springbok tour are also included.
