WORK ON TE OKA ROAD PLANNED Draft plans for widening and resigning the first mile of the Te Oka highway in preparation for sealing it were approved by the Wairewa ~ounty Council at its meeting on Friday, and it was decided to ask the consulting engineers to proceed with the detailed plans. It was stated that about one and a half acres of land would be taken for widening for two major diversions. On the motion of the acting-chair-man (Mr J. G. Lewthwaite), it was decided to have plans and specifications prepared for sealing Lower Church road, connecting the Christ-church-Akaroa State highway and the Port Levy highway. The consulting engineers submitted oroposals for widening and improving the first seven and a half miles of the Kaituna Valley road, suggesting that the work could be done in sections. The plan was approved, providing for an eventual 12ft seal. The clerk (Mr L. Wealleans) was instructed to call tenders for the crushing of 10.000 yards of shingle at Birdling’s Flat—sooo yards for the Kinloch metalling programme, 3500 yards of ’topcourse for sealing, and 1500 vards to be stockpiled. Cr. N Wright drew attention tot “scores” of concrete culvert pipes lying along the State highway between Little River and the foot of the hill It was stated that these had been dumped years ago,* during the depression. when it had been intended to construct a footpath. The foreman (Mr S. A. Sutherland) was instructed to insnect and report. The Minister o' Lands (Mr E. g. Corbett) said that the council could lease part of Montgomery Park. Hilltop. to the Youth Hostels’ Association to construct a hikers’ hostel if the property was changed from a scenic to a recreational reserve. It was decided to adopt the Minister’s suggestion.
The clerk reported that since the foreman had been appointed ranger 30 head of .stock had been impounded in the county.
