Three-Year-Old Trotters Show Fine Form At Nelson

TROTTING

The success of the three-year-old trotters Supervise and Native Cord was one of the features of the Nelson Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday and Monday. There have now been four winners at this age so far this season, the other two being Highland Glen and Durham Chief, both of which have shown outstanding ability. A number of other three-year-olds have been placed and it appears as though the standard among horses of this age is higher than it has been for some years. Supervise had three starts at Nelson for two wins and one second, while Native Cord recorded one win and two thirds from his four starts.

Supervise was purchased this season before she raced by Mr L. S. Smart, of Christchurch, who has met with considerable success with another young trotter in Lady Baffelan. Bred at Ashburton by Mr W. J. T. Lockhead, she is a bay filly by Super Note from an unraced mare In Cloudy Horizon, by Black Globe from the Wrack mare, Rapid Fire. She is closely related to many fine winners, including Maida Dillon, Nelson's Victory, Erinack, Loyal Peter, Highland Flirt, Jason’s Quest, Stirling Castle and .Mandrake. Super Note, a good winner at the trotting gait, was got by Quite Sure from Harvest Note, dam of Hidden Note, Scottish Note, Lightning Note, and Sure Note. Supervise has improved with every race since being trained by W. R. Butt. She showed great promise early in her career, but took time to become solid. Her first glimpse of form was in the Innovation Handicap at Oamaru last month when she finished on in great style for third to Worthy Boy and Gentle Anna. She was then unplaced on the first day of the recent Ashburton meeting before being taken to Nelson where she won very easily at her two starts on the first day of the meeting. On Monday in the Innovation Handicap she failed by a short length to catch Native Cord, which received a start of 48 yards. Native Cord, a rangy gelding by Ripcord from Native Huon, a winner at the pacing gait, is a half-brother to Native Dictator. He did his early racing from H. Stafford’s New Brighton stables, but now he is being prepared by H. M. Kerr, who races him in partnership with his breeder, Mr T. A. Farrell, of Cronadun.

Like Supervise, Native Cord has taken time to become solid. He is not yet too reliable, but with more racing and travelling he should develop into a fine winner. He finished third at his first start at Nelson on Saturday and later in the day was promoted to third over two miles. He returned a sound display of trotting to beat Supervise at his first attempt on Monday, but later failed over tw«J miles in the Members' Handicap won by Nirvana. Well Related

Special Attack, a winner at the Canterbury Park meeting last month and at Hutt Park on June 2, is bred to develop good form. She is a three-year-old filly by Attack from Kinver Lass, by Lusty Volo from Reno, by Jack Potts. Attack, which graduated to cup class, was by Light Brigade from Sparkling Sunshine. Reno, his second dam, is well known as the dam of Van Dieman, winner of the New Zealand and Royal Cups. Special Attack is raced by Mr R. Smith, and is trained at Addington by R. Young. Consistent Pacer

Trojan, a member of W. M. Denton’s team, is finding it hard to gain his first win. He was runner-up to Madam Peterson over two miles on the second day of the Ashburton Club’s meeting and was placed in his four appearances at the Nelson Club’s meeting. He was third to Dominion Monarch and Rosslyn Rowan in his division of the Novice Handicap on the first day and was runner-up to Adoration in the first division of the Primary Handicap. On Monday he was fourth in the Probationers’ Handicap and second to Rosslyn Rowan in the Visitors’ Handicap. Trojan is a five-year-old gelding by Preston from Worthy Volo, by Lusty Volo from Renowns Last, dam also of Worthy Gold.

Interest in Ribands Horsemen in the United States are greatly interested in the projected campaign by the Australian champion, Ribands, at Roosevelt Raceway, says Ron Bisman in a message from New York. What attracts their attention is Riband’s record of Imin 58 7-10 sec for one mile in an attempt against time at Harold Park, Sydney. Ribands is due to arrive in the United States tomorrow and he will join up with Eddie Cobb, who at the moment is the leading driver of the season on the basis or the percentage of drives to wins. If Ribands travels well, an attempt will be made to qualify him for an “A” classification soon after his arrival. Ribands will race in the interests of the Auckland studmaster. Mr Noel Simpson, who is at present in the United States, and Mr and Mrs F. P. Kelloway, of Sydney, who raced Ribands with success in New Zealand last season.

An eight-year-old ho'se by Lawn Derby from Marie Walla, by Walla Walla, Ribands will be left in the United States as a stud proposition at the end of his racing career. Ribands

will be a valuable stud horse as he will provide an outcross of Globe Derby blood, which has met with such great success in New Zealand and Australia. The Globe Derby line is practically extinct in the United States.
