AUTHORITY ON J. S. BACH

DR. C. T. LOFTHOUSE VISITING N.Z. (New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. Dr. C. T. Lofthouse, one of the world’s leading authorities on the music of J. S. Bach, arrived at Wellington in the Ruahine. Dr. Lofthouse is professor of piano (performing and accompanying) at the Royal College of Music. London. He has come to New Zealand with Mr Keith Falkner, professor of voice studies in the Music Department of Cornell University, to conduct music examinafions for the Royal Schools of Music of England. Dr. Lofthouse hopes to perform the Bach Clavier Concerto in F Minor with the National Orchestra. If possible. he will play the continue part in the St. Matthew’ Passion, in which Mr Falkner has many times sung the part of Christus. He said today, he believed there was a chance that the New Zealand Broadcasting Service might acquire- a good harpsichord for such a performance, but if such an instrument were not available he would use the piano. A frequent performer on the 8.8. C. Third Programme, Dr. Lofthouse has also become a familiar figure to Londoners attending the

Bach revival performances in recent years in the Royal Albert Hall. Dr. Lofthouse, accompanied by Mrs Lofthouse, was met by their daughter. Mrs F. H. Lockyer, whose husband is the Assistant United Kingdom Trade Commissioner in New Zealand.
