AUCKLAND BEATS THAMES VALLEY
WORK OUT FOR GAME WITH SPRINGBOKS (New Zealand Press Association) THAMES, June 12. The Auckland Rugby representatives who beat Thames Valley by 12 points to 10 todav will have to improve if they hope to" hold the Springboks on Saturday. Thames Valley fielded a strong side, but Auckland, with the better of the scrums all through and superiority in the line-outs, should have made better use of its opportunities. K. Davis passed well from the base of the Auckland scrum, and was soundly supported by his five-eighths, with tne second five-eighths. T. Lineen, the better, but Thames Valley’s fast forwards, with J. Darrah, D. Gordon, and N. Twentyman often in the lead, got among the Auckland backs in midfield and broke up many promising moves. Thames Valley's inside backs were outclassed, with the exception of R. Kerby, who was sound at second five-eighths. The centre. Jacomb, showed flashes ut brilliance. The breakdown of the inside backs was probably a result of the harrying tactics of the Auckland forwards, notably A. Pryor and D. J. Graham. For Thames Valley, Darrah and Innis each scored a try, both of which were converted by Jacomb. For Auckland. L. White. Lineen. D. F. Menzies, and Davis each scored a try.
HAWKE’S BAY BEATS COUNTIES
(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, June 12. Hawke's Bay beat South Auckland Counties by 14 points to 6 at Napier today. The Hawke's Bay forwards, led by W. Hargreaves, played inspired football into the wind in the second half. With the Springboks' match with Hawke s Bay less than three weeks away, the home side’s play was encouraging. H. Marett was in dashing form, and P. T. Walsh, who came into centre for the second half, could not hold him. Walsh was enterprising at times and showed great pace on attack, but on the whole his play was disappointing. Tries were scored for Hawke's Bay by I. Atkins, P. Heeney, and W. Ratima. D. Kivell converted one and kicked a penalty goal. Walsh kicked two penalty goals for Counties.
