CAR RELIABILITY TRIAL
TOUGH EVENT ON JUNE 23
BEACH CHAMPIONSHIP POSTPONED
One of the largest reliability trials to be organised in Canterbury will be held on June 23 and 24. The trial will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, and will continue for 18 hours, covering all types of roads and tracks in the province. It has been organised by the Canterbury Car Club. The course for the trial, which will begin in Russley road, near Burnside road, has not been disclosed, but a clause in the regulations, which says that entries will not be received from four-wheel drive vehicles, suggests that it will be a tough course. Fourwheel drive Azehicles are of use only in muddy and hilly conditions, and are not suited to sealed roads in a reliability trial. Several clubs in the South Island will be invited to compete. The trial will involve tests of driving skill and navigation. Each vehicle in the trial will have two drivers.
The trial carries prizes valued at £7O. The president of the Canterbury Car Club (Mr B. H. Paton), at a meeting of the committee last evening, congratulated the organiser of the trial (Mr A. W. Dickson) on progress in the organisation of the event. A motion that the South Island championship beach race, which was to have been held at South Brighton next Saturday be postponed, was carried. The convener of the speed committee (Mr N. Browne) recommended that the event be cancelled as it had not received sufficient support. Only 10 entries had been received—about half the. number required for the race to be a success. A member said that £63 was to be allocated in prize-money for the race, and this sum would not be recovered in spectator attendances with such a small entry.
Mr Paton: We might have a farce of a race in which, no-one finishes.
The motion of Mr H. G. Sheppard that the race be held at a later date was carried.
