MALAYA
Sir, —Closer examination by J. Hartley will reveal that the old leaders of the Malayan Liberation Army now lead his “organised gang.” The fate of the Malayan people may be a “side issue” to Mr Hartley, but to the Malayan people it must seem rather important. If, as is claimed. the people are terrorised by a gang, it would seem that the correct policy would be to seek the people’s cooperation and organise and arm them to deal with their own “bandits.” It plight then become unnecessary to □legalise trade unions, finger-print all persons 12 years 01 age and upwards, detain suspected persons up to a maximum of three years without charge or trial, uproot and put behind barbed wire thousands of people, spray crops with oil, and employ Dyak headhunters—a policy which can only increase the people’s bewilderment and misery.—Yours, etc., , J.S. June 12, 1958.
