ALBERT SCHWEITZER
Sir, —I, too, was shocked at the presumption of a derogatory criticism of Albert Schweitzer. Reading of the life work of this wonderful man of many parts among savages in the jungles of equatorial Africa, oi the conditions under which he started, of the tolerance, understanding and. obviously, compromise needed to overcome primitive prejudices, superstitions and taboos before the noble work could even begin, one can assume him to be the best judge of how to run his own hospital. Anct how he does it is his own concern After decades of resisting every conceivable difficulty, hardship and setback,, he remains in that inferno fighting pain and death, although over 80 years old! He needs no defending by anybody, especially from what was after all. the merest wasp-bite on the foot of a giant long since immune. But thanks to Enid Cook it has no*, gone unremarked.—Yours, etc., HEAR YE! June 12, 1956.
