TESTING OF VEHICLES

Sir,—Modern cars depend on their shock absorbers to a great extent for their stability and road-holding. Shock absorbers do not last for ever, but no apparent test of them is made at the City Council testing station. It seems that a- car would pass for a warrant of fitness even if its shock absorbers were not working at all. It is common to read of a car “becoming out of control,” and hitting a pole or bridge, or leaving the road. Wornout or inefficient shock absorbers may well be the cause of these accidents or at least a contributory factor.— Yours, etc., CHECK ’EM. May 28. 1956.

[This letter was referred to the Traffic Superintendent for the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P Kellar) who said: “Most modern motor vehicles are very dependent upon the correct operation of the shock absorbers. which are usually incorporated in the front suspension Where such absorbers are faulty or unbalanced so as to interfere with the safe handling or steering the vehicle is rejected.”]
